Sell It, Donate It, or Let It Go: A Stress‑Free Guide to Decluttering

To keep with the decluttering theme. Today, on the blog, we’re going to talk about letting go of old belongings. Whether you’re feeling weighed down by the donations that continue to pile up, or the list of items you’ve been meaning to sell. We get it. It can feel overwhelming, but trust us, it doesn’t have to be!

First things first. Those donations you’ve been meaning to drop off for a while? We are happy to carry away donations after we leave. We understand that as life happens, dropping off donations falls to the bottom of the list. And most importantly, we’re happy to be able to help you check one more thing off your list!

Yes, letting go of old belongings might include donating some items and perhaps some that must go in the recycling or garbage. However, you might also find yourself with items worth selling. Today, we’re going to chat through selling versus donating, and I’ll give you a simple checklist to help you narrow down your options!

First things first: is it worth selling?

Before listing items online or planning a garage sale, we usually encourage our clients to ask themselves these three questions:

  1. Is this item still in demand?

  2. Can I realistically sell it within 30 days?

  3. Is the time and energy worth the return?

It’s totally fine if the answer is no. It just means that donating your item might be the better option!

What items are usually worth selling? The following items tend to bring the best return with the least effort.

  • Gentley used brand-name clothing & handbags

  • Furniture in excellent condition (especially solid wood or modern styles)

  • Home decor that fits with current designs

  • Electronics less than 2-3 years old

If it’s clean, functional, and stylish, it might be worth it.

What items are best to donate? Some items might be better donated. They’re simply not worth your time or emotional energy.

We often suggest donating:

  • Everyday clothing

  • Books, DVDs, and CDs

  • Outdated decor

  • Household items

  • Items that need repair

Remember, even when you donate, you are giving your unwanted goods a new home!

Where to Sell Your Items (Without the Stress)

Best Places to Sell Locally in Bismarck & Fargo

  • Facebook Marketplace – Great for furniture and home goods

  • Local Buy/Sell Groups – Fast, community-based sales

  • Garage Sales

Best Online Options

  • Poshmark or ThredUp – Clothing and accessories

  • eBay – Specialty items and collectibles

Pro tip: if it hasn’t sold in 2-3 weeks, it’s time to donate it! Not holding on to your items for too long will help you maintain a stress-free process.

The Mindset Shift That Makes Decluttering Easier

One of the most freeing realizations we see with our clients is this:

The value of an item is not the same as the value of your space

Your home should support your current lifestyle. That means creating a mindset where letting go is ok. It creates room for clarity, calm, and a home that truly works for you!

Happy decluttering, happy donating, or happy selling. Whatever route you choose, just remember that your space evolves with you!
