Simple Summer Closet Refresh for Kids

Summers are a busy time. We feel it, and I know parents feel it! While school is out, children are on the go, growing fast, and truly living in their space. This includes their closet. For some kiddos, summertime is when the fashion shows happen, constantly pulling out their favorite outfits. This means closets can start to feel full, a little messy, and harder to manage, but it’s not a problem. A simple summer refresh can make everything easier.

Here’s how we approach a child’s closet:

Start with what you have

Honestly, kids' closets already have everything you need; they just need a reset.

In this space, there was a mix of:

  • Winter layers

  • Dress clothes

  • Everyday pieces

It felt full, but with the right approach, we made it work beautifully.

Step 1: Edit and simplify

As children are constantly growing, their closet and staple pieces have to grow with them. We work with our clients (& their kids!), understanding their needs and goals. For some this is removing items that no longer fit, or have holes and stains. Others, ask us to organize everything we find. Either way, we always begin by sorting items into categories. With this being a summer closet refresh, we pull those heavy winter items out, placing them on a higher shelf or in another designated area.

We keep the current, everyday favorites front and center. This step makes the biggest difference in any kid’s closet organization project.

Step 2: Refresh for summer

Summer means bright colors and light fabrics. We tailor the closet to the season. Focusing on organizing the items in such a way that will inspire creativity and create autonomy when getting dressed. We always organize by type and color, and a closet for a little one is no different.

Step 3: Make it functional

Function is everything, especially for kiddos.

As you’ll see, to create a manageable and easy-to-maintain system, we added a simple basket for larger items and a bin for accessories and extras.

Take a look at the photos of our closet refresh. We know this little girl is overjoyed by her new closet, full of creativity and wonder.

Sometimes, a small reset makes a big difference. This kids’ closet organization project shows how a simple edit and refresh can completely transform a space. Light, easy, and functional, which is just what summer calls for!

Cheers,
Lexi
