Let’s Talk About the Drawer We’re All Avoiding
If you joined me last week — welcome back! And if you’re just popping in now — hi! I’m Lexi, owner of Organize with Lexi here in Bismarck and Fargo. I spend my days helping others by creating calm, functional, and beautiful spaces in their home.
This month on the blog, I’m bringing you along for a four‑week wellness challenge I recently led. Each week, we focus on one simple organizing task. Nothing overwhelming, nothing dramatic, just approachable steps that make your home feel lighter and more supportive.
Last week, we kicked things off with the 10‑minute daily declutter, and I hope you felt how quickly those small wins build momentum.
This week, we’re shifting our focus to something that almost every single home in America has…
The infamous junk drawer.
Yes. That drawer.
You know the one.
The drawer you open quickly and close even quicker, the drawer full of “I’ll deal with this later,” the drawer that seems to magically refill itself no matter how hard you try.
Well, this week, we’re giving that drawer a fresh start.
From a Junk Drawer to a Utility Drawer
This challenge is all about taking something chaotic and turning it into something functional and something that actually serves you.
And just like last week, we’re keeping it simple.
Start by emptying the drawer completely.
I know it can feel a little dramatic, dumping everything out, but this step is a game‑changer. Seeing everything in one place helps you understand what’s actually living in that drawer (and usually, it’s a surprising amount of random things!).
From there, begin sorting items into little groups. Pens with pens. Batteries with batteries. Tape with tape. Hair ties, chargers, scissors — everything gets a category.
As you do this, you’ll naturally discover items you don’t need anymore, items that are broken, and items that have wandered into the drawer but actually belong somewhere else.
Once you’ve sorted, edited, and relocated what doesn’t belong, you’ll be left with the things that truly deserve that space. And here’s where the magic happens — your junk drawer becomes a utility drawer. Something purposeful. Something neat, clean, and easy to maintain.
If you want to elevate it even further, drawer organizers come in handy. You can find great ones at Target, Walmart, Amazon, HomeGoods, or TJ Maxx. Just be sure to measure your drawer first so everything fits nicely.
It doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just has to work for you.
Why This Challenge Matters
The drawer reset is more than just tidying a small space; it builds on the momentum from Week 1. You’re continuing the process of letting go, creating clarity, and resetting areas of your home that have been quietly overwhelming you.
We’re building habits!
Small resets like this train your brain to see possibilities in your home again.
A drawer may feel small, but the emotional relief of opening it and seeing calm instead of chaos?
That feeling is huge.
I hope you join me for Week 2 of this challenge.
I can’t wait to hear what you find in your drawer… because trust me, everyone finds something good. :)
Cheers,
Lexi
